Client Brief

This school approached us looking for ideas on how to best utilise the unused space surrounding their existing playground.

Plan To Garden Approach

Although the space available was quite small, we wanted to encourage lots of physical activity so built an assault course that can be enjoyed by teams. Directly outside the existing art room, we created an open-air art and activities area complete with fixed tables, benches and blackboards. We also built an open-sided classroom with fixed seating for 30 children, allowing lessons to take place outside during the summer months. Other hardwood seats, including a ‘Friendship Bench’, have been placed around the playground and surrounding area, while newly constructed brick and wooden walls provide lots of play opportunities. The project was completed with a sensory planting scheme to stimulate the children and encourage an early interest in plants and nature.
